Saturdays are days for music

Isaiah's THE WORLD TODAY JUST NUTS "Joe's Support" went up earlier tonight.

joessupport

Saturdays do not give me what the Eagles would call a peaceful, easy feeling. It's a mad dash for me to get all the records and notes I've been working on throughout the week properly filed and notated. I usually get up and I'll go to the gym and work out with C.I. Then I'll grab a box of documents after I get out of the shower and go through them while eating breakfast. If I'm lucky, around 11 I will be done. If I'm lucky.

In which case, it's officially time to relax. Time to think about what I'm hungry for when lunch rolls around and time to listen to some music I've had music on in the background the whole morning by this point. But this is when I can really listen and enjoy. Sometimes, I'll go to C.I.'s music room and look through her vinyl for something I haven't listened to in some time. Otherwise, I'll just grab a favorite that I listen to frequently.

If my daughter's around, she'll pick one or more to listen to. As I've noted before, Dionne Warwick is her favorite singer. She's also into Nick Jonas, Harry Styles and, most recently, Diana Ross (the new MINIONS movie helped that). I thought she might like Diana's work with the Supremes and she does but prefers the solo work. Her three favorite Diana albums of late are THANK YOU, THE BOSS and SWEPT AWAY.

"Iraq snapshot" (THE COMMON ILLS):

Tuesday, July 12, 2022.  US President Joe Biden continues to persecute Julian Assange. Miss Moqtada al-Sadr continues to be obsessed with gay people in Iraq, Nouri al-Maliki states the Coordination Framework is close to naming a prime minister, and much more.

WIKILEAKS Tweets:

Julian Assange faces a 175 year sentence if extradited for revealing war crimes such as the #CollateralMurder gunning down of civilians including two journalists in Iraq which occured 15 years ago today (July 12) #FreeAssangeNOW #CollateralMurder
This is why the US government is trying to extradite Julian Assange
This is why the US government is trying to extradite Julian Assange: for revealing the US massacre of civilians, including two @Reuters journalists in #Iraq #FreeAssangeNOW #AssangeCase

Kieron Monks (UK's TRIBUNE) explains:

Pregnant women shot at checkpoints. Journalists gleefully gunned down from a helicopter. Child prostitutes preyed upon by mercenaries. The full squalid record of the West’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is the US government’s case against Julian Assange. The charges against him are all in response to documents leaked by Chelsea Manning that exposed the brutality of coalition forces in the Middle East. As Edward Snowden puts it: ‘They want to put him in jail for the best work Wikileaks ever did.’

[. . .]

‘The message has been sent,’ says Lawrence. ‘If you’re going to report on US national security and classified documents you would think deeply about it. I think it may be a long time before someone like Chelsea Manning or an organisation like Wikileaks repeat that exposure.’ There was a moment, he continues, in which we could have learned how the world really works; after Assange, though, everyone is ‘frightened again’. ‘It feels like they’ve won.’ For Assange’s family and global coalition of supporters, though, there is no option but to fight on.

US President Joe Biden continues to persecute Julian Assange for the 'crime' of journalism.   Over the weekend, DW noted:

More than 70 members of the German parliament from four political parties have called on US President Joe Biden and the British government to stop the impending deportation of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange from the UK to the US to face espionage charges.

"Journalists must not be persecuted or punished for their work anywhere in the world," the Bundestag deputies wrote in an open letter. "In the interest of press freedom as well as for humanitarian reasons in view of his poor state of health, Julian Assange must be released without delay."

Assange has been imprisoned in the UK since April 2019, when the government of Ecuador, which had hosted him in its London embassy for seven years, withdrew his political asylum.

THE GOOD MEN PROJECT points out, "The curious thing about all this is that the United States has never denied the facts revealed in the 700,000 White House and Pentagon documents, mostly about the barbarities committed by the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan, leaked by Wikileaks: torture, assassinations, massacres, espionage, manipulation. In other words, they want to punish the whistleblower, not the perpetrators, with 175 years in prison (which hardly anyone will be able to serve). The truth has been murdered. So has journalism."  Is it possible for Joe Biden to be the most hated man in the world?  Yes, and as he continues to persecute Julian Assange, he is on track to become just that.  The world is watching and the word they're saying in various languages is: Hypocrite.  THE DAILY SABAH explains:

The United States and the United Kingdom are constantly criticizing the press and freedom of expression in other countries. They publish reports and give official support to civic organizations that prepare press freedom assessments in their countries. They seem very assertive about the whole thing and they are radical in their approach. However, the freedoms of press and expression in their own countries are not unlimited as they recommend to other countries. The most dramatic indicator of this is the yearslong "hunt" for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

U.S. intelligence pursued Australian-born Assange on 18 charges, including espionage, for releasing thousands of classified documents in 2010 and 2011. Assange had taken refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he lived for six years under inhumane conditions. He has been in prison in the U.K. since 2019. Two weeks ago, the British government accepted his extradition to the U.S.

So what is Assange’s unforgivable great crime? WikiLeaks documents released by Assange contained information about how U.S. soldiers killed hundreds of civilians in Afghanistan. Other documents showed that 66,000 civilians were killed during the invasion of Iraq and that Iraqi forces tortured the prisoners.

Can the information in the disclosed documents be denied? No. So, has Assange actually been punished for so many years for being a journalist and fulfilling his responsibilities towards his profession, humanity and reality? Is that why the British judge is upholding Assange's extradition, leaving the final decision up to the government? Is the judge concerned about the reports in the U.S. press that the CIA is plotting to assassinate Assange? Doesn't he want to bear the responsibility of leaving Assange to an agenda that knows no limit?

Whatever the decision, the courage demonstrated by Assange, whose life was poisoned because he did his job properly, and the hypocrisy of those who gave speeches about "freedom of the press" and remained silent about his drama, have already gone down in history.

Joe Biden the tinhorn dictator.  The thug who tries to destroy journalism unless it flatters him.  The next time he stands up on the world stage and tries to lecture, the whole world will know what a liar and hypocrite he is.  And they'll know about the US client-states that aren't really independent countries.  Colonies like Australia, for example.  Oscar Grenfell (WSWS) notes:

When the Labor Party scraped into office following the May 21 federal election, some supporters of Julian Assange voiced hopes that the new government would defend the WikiLeaks publisher because he is an Australian journalist and citizen undergoing persecution abroad.

The crudest and most thoughtless expression of these hopes came in the form of an update to a petition demanding that the Australian government act to free Assange. Over the course of almost three years, the petition has been signed by more than 730,000 people, and has served as an important focal point for the latent, mass support that exists for Assange.

But on July 4, the petition’s founder declared that it was no longer necessary to issue any demands on the Australian government. The sole evidence provided was that Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had purportedly signed the petition, and that some members of the government have hinted that it may engage in “quiet diplomacy” on behalf of Assange. “Now that we confirm that the Prime Minister of Australia is one of us and together with all of our collective 731,000 Signatories to this petition we will together move forward with direct representations to the responsible Public Officers in both the USA and Britain,” the update declared.

It was necessary to “understand that the Australian Government does have a right to negotiate the matter of freedom of Julian Assange in the best way they see to secure his freedom… We do not intend to work against any action being taken in different ways by any individual Signatory”—i.e., Albanese.

“[W]e will move forward in a peaceful, harmonious and inclusive manner,” the update declared, that is with regards to the Labor government.

To be blunt, such statements are exercises in wilful delusion. Since forming government, Labor has not issued anything that even could be described as weasel-words in support of Assange. Its attitude towards the WikiLeaks publisher is barely concealed hostility.

John Pilger, the award-winning Australian filmmaker and journalist who has been a close confidante of Assange since 2010, said defeat for the 51-year-old in his battle in British courts against extradition could have far-reaching consequences for journalism.

“I don’t think there is any doubt in my mind... that if Julian goes to the United States, and is effectively dropped in a penal hell hole, that will be the end of him literally, he will die,” Pilger said in an interview on Talking Post with chief news editor Yonden Lhatoo.

Pilger said Assange’s treatment over the years - he has been in London’s high-security Belmarsh prison since 2019 - was “torture”, adding that for the Australian national “anything” would be better than being sent to the US.

Prior to his incarceration, Assange obtained asylum from Ecuador in 2012 and spent seven years in Quito’s embassy in London as part of efforts to avoid extradition to Sweden where he was facing charges of sexual assault. He denies all wrongdoing.

Washington is seeking his extradition over charges of espionage and computer misuse linked to WikiLeaks’ publication of classified US documents since 2010.

"Computer misuse."  Oh, there's a charge that's going to stick to Joe's ass for history.  "Computer misuse" -- tortured and persecuted for "computer misuse."  Let that be one of the many anchors hung around Joe's neck by history.

While Julian suffers, old man Joe shuffles and stumbles across the global stage.  THE TIMES OF ISRAEL reports:

Concerns regarding 79-year-old President Joe Biden’s ability to weather a 10-day trip abroad were among the reasons why the White House decided to delay the Mideast portion of the tour, according to a Sunday report in The New York Times.

Biden was initially scheduled to visit Israel and Saudi Arabia last month after attending the G7 Summit in Germany. But a week before he left for Europe, the White House announced that the Mideast trip would be postponed for scheduling reasons.

Reports at the time said the administration was still trying to finalize details regarding the Saudi portion of the trip. The US is working to broker an agreement that would see Egypt transfer control of a pair of Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia in an agreement that would also see Riyadh take steps toward normalizing ties with Israel, which has interests in those island. The agreement is still being finalized, with the White House hoping to seal the deal by the time Biden lands in Jeddah on Friday to attend a summit of Middle Eastern leaders. He’ll be in Israel and the West Bank for two days beforehand.

But while the White House hinted the delay had to do with factors regarding the host countries, a US official told The Times that it would have been “crazy” to put the oldest president in American history through a 10-day foreign trip.

He can't handle ten days of cushy photo-ops but he thinks he can run for the presidency in 2024?  It's time to take grandpa's keys and tell him he's too old to drive anymore.

Dave DeCamp (ANTIWAR.COM) explains:

President Biden penned an op-ed about his upcoming trip to the Middle East that was published in The Washington Post on Saturday, where he falsely claimed that US troops are not engaged in combat missions in the region.

The president wrote: “Next week, I will be the first president to visit the Middle East since 9/11 without US troops engaged in a combat mission there.”

Biden’s claim came not long after he updated Congress on the deployment of US combat troops. In a letter to Congress dated June 8, the president said US troops were stationed in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.

In Yemen, Biden said that a “small number of United States military personnel are deployed to Yemen to conduct operations against al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and ISIS.” He also mentioned that US forces were providing support to the Saudi-led coalition in a “non-combat role” by providing “military advice and limited information.”

In Iraq and Syria, Biden said US troops are “working by, with, and through local partners to conduct operations against” ISIS and al-Qaeda. At the end of 2021, the US formally ended its combat mission in Iraq, but all 2,500 troops that were stationed there stayed, and US operations on the ground didn’t really change.

Stephen Wertheim Tweets:

Biden: “Next week, I will be the first president to visit the Middle East since 9/11 without U.S. troops engaged in a combat mission there.” Hard to see how this is not misleading, unless he is removing U.S. troops from Iraq, Syria, and Yemen within days.

In Iraq, Miss Moqtada al-Sadr is determined to continue targeting Iraq's LGBTQ community.  Miss Moqtada's obsession with gay men has led to many rumors of what exactly happens when the tubby tyrant removes his robes at night.  What is known is that Miss Moqtada is pushing to criminalize the LGBTQ community,  Amir Ashour offered the following series of Tweets after the news of a new draft law broke on Friday:

Thread (1/10)🚨URGENT - SHARE WIDELY --------------------------------- The Iraqi parliament is working on passing a law that completely bans #LGBT+ identities, with individuals like calling for a day dedicated to fighting against #LGBT+ people. ina.iq/160351--.html

Local legal "experts" mistakenly compare queer identities to "shameful acts" which in their opinion include "prostitution" claiming that these "crimes" are punished by the death penalty. THIS IS FALSE.

(3/10) Iraqi laws DO NOT punish queerness. In fact, the Iraqi government, in front of the international community, has recognized the right to life for all citizens regardless of their sexual orientation. Iraq is obliged to protect #LGBT+ citizens under international obligations.

(4/10) Instead of holding perpetrators accountable, has FAILED to protect its citizens. In fact, they have been the perpetrators of many of the crimes committed against #LGBT+ people, women, and other marginalized groups.
(5/10) Iraqi is currently being led by a group of fundamentalist terrorists who are leading armed groups and spreading fear and violence instead of protecting the human rights of Iraqis and building a country for all citizens, including #LGBT+ citizens.

(6/10) While #LGBT+ Iraqis have been the target of systematic killing campaigns and things are as bad as it gets, this law will allow the government to "legally" get away with murder putting #LGBT+ citizens and those advocating for us in greater danger.

(7/10) This law will be a death sentence to the #LGBT+ movement in Iraq. A movement that young advocates and organizations like have worked on building for 8 years risking our lives and the lives of our loved ones.
(8/10) Some members of the international community have supported #LGBT+ rights in Iraq, however, the international community has generally failed to put enough political pressure on the Iraqi government to make sure that the lives and rights of #LGBT+ Iraqis are protected.
(9/10) THIS IS YOUR CHANCE. DO SOMETHING. We DEMAND that members of the international community do everything they can, whether through diplomacy or even sanctions, to make sure that this law does not pass.

(10/10) #LGBT+ Iraqis need the same level of mobilization that the international community has been able to do for other groups. DO IT NOW.

In other news, Iraq still has no prime minister or president despite holding elections October 10th.  Chenar Chalak (RUDAW) reports:

The Coordination Framework is closing in on naming Iraq’s next prime minister, said Leader of the State of Law Coalition Nouri al-Maliki on Monday, a month after the withdrawal of rival Muqtada al-Sadr from the parliament.

Maliki, a key member of the pro-Iran Coordination Framework, on Monday addressed the latest developments in the faction’s quest towards forming Iraq’s next government and putting an end to the political impasse that has plagued the country since October’s elections.

Maliki stated that the Framework has made an important stride in the political dialogue, stressing that they have been open to “ideas and mechanisms” from all the political components.

“The framework is close to achieving its goals, the most important of which is naming the prime minister [of Iraq] and forming a government capable of advancing the current security and service situation within the mechanisms prepared in advance to serve Iraq and its honorable people,” read a statement from Maliki’s office.

Sam Smith "Love Me More"

Have you ever felt like being somebody else?

Feeling like the mirror isn't good for your health?
Every day I'm tryin' not to hate myself
But lately, it's not hurtin' like it did before
Maybe I am learning how to love me more
It used to burn
Every insult, every word
But it helped me learn (yeah)
Self-worth I had to earn
So I tried every night
To sit with sorrow
And eventually, it set me free
Have you ever felt like being somebody else?
Feeling like the mirror isn't good for your health?
Every day I'm tryin' not to hate myself
But lately, it's not hurtin' like it did before
Maybe I am learning how to love me more
Just a little bit (love me more)
Just a little bit (love me more)
Oh, no (love me more)
Just a little bit (love me more)
I used to cry myself to sleep at night
I'd blame the sky when the mess was in my mind
I couldn't see, I couldn't breathe
So I sat with sorrow
And eventually, it set me free
Have you ever felt like being somebody else?
Feeling like the mirror isn't good for your health?
(If you have, let me hear you right now)
Every day I'm tryin' not to hate myself (yeah, yeah, yeah)
But lately, it's not hurtin' like it did before (sweet child)
Maybe I am learning how to love me more

That's Sam Smith's new song "Love Me More" which Kat notes has climbed into the Hot 100 at number 85.

Hopefully, this means Sam has a new album out and that they won't gut it at the last minute due to a pandemic as happened with the last album.  Nothing could be worse than that last album.

"Iraq snapshot" (THE COMMON ILLS):

Monday, July 11, 2022.  US tax dollars go to wars in retirement homes!  Thanks Joe Biden and Ukraine!  Pro-Nazi Andrey Melnyk quietly loses his job in Ukraine's government after advancing the Nazi's actions in several infamous comments over the last weeks, Iraqi lawmakers target the LGBTQ community, and much more.

Last Monday, July 4th, WSWS published Johannes Stern's article which opened:

In an interview last week on the podcast “Jung & Naiv,” Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andrey Melnyk once again defended the Ukrainian fascist, anti-Semite and Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera. This comes as no surprise. Melnyk is a known Bandera admirer.

This time, however, Melnyk went further than usual. He not only praised Bandera as a “freedom fighter,” but denied that OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) units Bandera commanded carried out mass murder, saying, “There is no evidence that Bandera troops murdered hundreds of thousands of Jews.”

Melnyk’s statements are on the level of Holocaust deniers. The Banderites’ involvement in pogroms, mass shootings of Jews and the Nazi war of extermination against the Soviet Union is an incontrovertible historical fact.

When journalist Tilo Jung confronted Melnyk about the crimes committed by Bandera, the Ukrainian ambassador defended them, saying, “I will not tell you today that I dissociate myself from this. And that’s it.”

Jung earlier quoted a leaflet that the OUN distributed as the Nazi Wehrmacht entered Lviv: “People, you must know this: Muscovites, Poles, Hungarians and Jews, these are your enemies. Destroy them, you must know that. Your leadership, your leader, Stepan Bandera.”

Melnyk’s statements not only expose the Ukrainian government, which worships Bandera and the OUN despite their genocidal crimes, erects statues and renames streets and squares in his honor.

It also sheds light on the essentially fascistic character of the ruling class in Germany, which 81 years after the invasion of the Soviet Union is again massively rearming and taking a leading role in the NATO proxy war in Ukraine against Russia.

Melnyk is a central figure in this. He is a welcome guest on talk shows to drum up support for more German arms deliveries to Ukraine. When Chancellor Scholz announced the massive German rearmament in the Bundestag on February 27, Melnyk was a guest of honor.

The German government’s silence on Melnyk’s recent remarks is not simply a scandal. It is part of a deliberate campaign to rehabilitate fascism and ultimately Hitler himself.

NOTES FROM POLAND explained:

Poland’s foreign ministry has intervened after Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany denied that Ukrainian national leader Stepan Bandera was responsible for the mass murder of ethnic Poles and Jews, and also sought to justify his collaboration with Nazi Germany.

The episode has renewed tensions over what has long been a sensitive issue in Polish-Ukrainian relations. In response, Ukraine’s foreign ministry has distanced itself from the words of the ambassador, Andrii Melnyk, saying that they were just his “own opinion”.

No, not his "own opinion.''  He is glorifying a butcher and denying reality.  That happens a lot with those in the current Ukraine government.  On Thursday, WORLD ISRAEL NEWS noted:

Stepan Bandera, “not only for me personally, but also for many, many Ukrainians, personifies the freedom fighter,” Melnyk told a Die Welt journalist in a radio interview published last Friday.

“Melnyk’s statement trivializes the Holocaust,” read the headline published by the leading German newspaper.

“There are no written laws for those who fight for freedom,” said Melnyk, who dismissed Bandera’s major role in the Holocaust in comments indicating Holocaust denial.

“Robin Hood is also respected by everyone, and he also did not work according to the law current at the time.”

Melnyk refused to acknowledge — despite being provided clear evidence of Bandera’s alliance with the Nazis and orders to “destroy” the Jews, who he referred to as the “enemy” — that the Ukrainian nationalist leader and his men were involved in the murder of 800,000 Jews.

Over the weekend, POLITICO reported:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday recalled his country’s ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, who caused controversy after defending a 20th century Nazi collaborator.

A decree published by Zelenskyy’s presidential office on Saturday afternoon only mentioned the “dismissal” of Melnyk, without providing any further information about the reasons for his removal, where the ambassador would go next, or who would replace him.

Melnyk’s departure from Berlin is part of a bigger reshuffle ordered by Zelenskyy on Saturday. The Ukrainian president also recalled ambassadors to various other countries including Hungary, the Czech Republic, Norway and India.

Even then, Zelensky didn't condemn him.  Condemning him would have outraged his supporters in Ukraine who agree with him, who glorify the Nazis of WWII and see themselves as linked to them.  Calling Melnyk out would have risked creating domestic turmoil in Ukriane.  These are the people that the Sean Penns and Mila Kunises have spread their legs for.

It's such a 'noble' war, you understand.   ANTIWAR.COM's Kyle Anzalone reports:

The United Nations says Kiev’s and Moscow’s soldiers used elderly and disabled civilians as human shields. In one situation, Ukrainian soldiers hid in a nursing home, provoking an attack that killed dozens of residents.

The report by the UN Office of the High Commissioner says Ukrainian, Russian troops and forces aligned with Moscow are using civilians as human shields. "Both Russian armed forces and affiliated armed groups as well as Ukrainian armed forces took up positions either in residential areas or near civilian objects, from where they launched military operations without taking measures for the protection of civilians present," it concludes.

The report detailed one incident of Kiev’s soldiers using human shields in Ukraine’s Donbas region shortly after the Russian invasion. According to the UN Office of the High Commissioner, the residents of a nursing home in the Luhansk region were unable to evacuate because Ukrainian forces mined the roads around the facility.

At ANTIWAR.COM, Dave De Camp notes:

The Biden administration announced Friday a new $400 million weapons package for Ukraine that includes more High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), 150mm artillery ammunition, and tactical vehicles.

The new aid marks the 15th weapons package the US has pledged for Ukraine since Russia invaded the country on February 24, demonstrating the Biden administration’s commitment to flooding the country with arms.

And the US government has sent inflation soaring and created food shortages with this war of choice.  Jean Shaoul (WSWS) explains, "They have imposed sanctions on Russia that have included banning the country from the SWIFT international money transfer system to destroy Russia’s economy by blocking its exports of fuel, food and fertilizers. This has driven up prices that were already soaring due to their failure to pursue a coronavirus elimination policy, thereby prolonging the pandemic, upending the world economy and disrupting global supply chains."

On Iraq, Alex MacDonald (MIDDLE EAST EYE) reports:

Rights groups have reacted with alarm to proposals for a law banning homosexuality in Iraq, warning that it would allow anti-LGBTQ+ vigilantes to "get away with murder".

A member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee told the official Iraqi News Agency on Friday that it had begun formulating proposals to criminalise homosexuality, which was made legal in Iraq after the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

"It was agreed within the parliament to collect signatures after returning to session to legislate a law prohibiting homosexuality in Iraq," said Aref al-Hamami, an MP with the State of Law coalition led by former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki.

"[The] legislation of such a law will be reinforced by legal provisions that prevent homosexuality and the perversions associated with it."

Although homosexuality has been officially legal in Iraq for almost two decades, politicians and religious leaders in the country have frequently railed against LGBTQ+ people, and laws punishing "immodest acts" have been used to target them.

We noted this development in Friday's snapshot when IRAQI NEWS AGENCY reported it.  Sarah Davison (Austrlalia's Q NEWS) notes:

In a statement to GAY TIMES, head of IraQueer Amir Ashour opened up about the implications of the proposed legislation.

"The Iraqi government is using their hatred for LGBT+ people to distract the public from their failure to form a government, provide basic services, and hold perpetrators accountable for different human rights violations," he said.

"The international community must put pressure on Iraq immediatetely.  The lives of LGBT+ people and the future of the queer movement is on the line."

For more information, follow IraQueer.

In other news, Julian Bechocha (RUDAW) reports:

Shiite cleric and head of Iraq's National Wisdom Movement Ammar al-Hakim on Sunday called on the two top Kurdish parties to accelerate efforts in agreeing on a candidate for Iraq's presidency with the country mired in political deadlock.

Hakim stated that the Iraqi presidency post "is greater than being a merit for one of the components of the country" and asked the Kurdistan Region's parties "to speed up the decision of the candidate for the presidency and to look at this national entitlement with great responsibility" in a sermon following Eid al-Adha's prayer.

The Kurdish political giants – the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) – have had disagreements over a variety of issues in recent months, and their race over Iraq's presidential position further escalated the tensions.

For those keeping track, that's the second nudge in eight days.  Why the nudging?  Clearing the Framework has decided upon whom they're going to name prime minister designate.  For that to happen, a president needs to be decided upon because it is the duty of the president to announce the prime minister-designate.

We'll wind down with this from MS. MAGAZINE:

Ms. Magazine
MORE THAN A MAGAZINE, A MOVEMENT

Dear Common Ills,

With the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the biggest challenge we all face is finding ways to protect five decades of hard-fought gains for women.

Winning this historic battle means providing accurate, timely and actionable information to hundreds of thousands of activists, student, volunteers and the press.

That's what we do at Ms. We have been reporting on the battles for abortion rights since our launch 50 years ago in 1972. And for each of these 50 years, Ms. has been on the frontlines, spotlighting strategies for moving forward in the fight for full equality.

You more than most, because of your deep commitment to women’s rights and equality, will understand and appreciate the urgent nature of this e-mail.

It's because your support is critical that we're inviting you to join a small, select group. A special and integral part of our Ms. community.

We call each other Ms. Partners. And, as the name indicates the purpose is to “partner” with and advance the essential mission of Ms. going into the critical months and years ahead.

You can make a one-time tax-deductible contribution of $50 or more (a dollar for every year Ms. has been reporting). If you give $1,000 or more, you become a Lifetime Partner and member of the Ms. Community.

Or you can join our Sustaining Partner Program by setting up a recurring gift of $5 or more each month.

Our Partners make it possible for Ms. to keep our readers informed, both in print and online at the very moment equality, women’s rights and democracy itself are under assault by the far-right hell bent on imposing their distorted beliefs on the rest of us.

Ms. started a powerful strategy in the abortion rights fight

Ms. covers the news and makes it; reports on trends and helps make them. In its 1972 debut issue, Ms. ran a bold petition in which 53 well-known U.S. women called for an end to laws prohibiting abortion and declared “We Have Had an Abortion” – despite laws in most states rendering the procedure illegal.

The Washington Post credited the petition with the “start of a powerful strategy in the U.S. abortion rights movement: ending the secrecy that had kept many women out of the fight.”

Now in the wake of the Court's decision, we must once again demand the repeal of all laws restricting women’s reproductive freedoms. And we must finally secure the Equal Rights Amendment in the Constitution.

The final drive for the ERA

The ERA is the ultimate insurance policy – a permanent guard against the whims of the Court and of a future right-wing majority in Congress.

Ms. is closely tracking and reporting on efforts to ensure the ERA is finally added to the U.S. Constitution as the 28th Amendment. Although all the requirements set out in the Constitution for an amendment have been met, the final certification of the ERA has been blocked by Senate Republicans wielding the filibuster to prevent a vote by the Senate.

One thing is certain. Whether we’re dealing with the overturn of Roe v. Wade by a Supreme Court stacked with Trump-appointed justices… or overcoming the final barriers to enshrining the Equal Rights Amendment in the Constitution… we simply must be prepared for what is nothing less than major battles for the survival and advancement of women’s rights.

And that’s where you and the special Ms. Partners are critical.

YOUR Role in Helping Make History

Members of this special group make it possible for Ms. magazine to provide accurate, timely and actionable information, in print, online and through our highly acclaimed podcasts.

There’s no doubt that by joining together we can meet the challenges that lie ahead in 2022. And this means being able to count on the partnership of caring, committed friends like you.

We hope you will accept this special invitation

and become a Ms. Partner today.

Ms. is far, far more than a magazine--for 50 years Ms. has played a key role in the women’s movement and stood firmly as its trusted information source. With the support of dedicated Partners like you Ms. will remain fiercely independent and on the frontlines.

Through good times and bad, we know we can count on you to help carry on the critical mission of Ms. Together we can strengthen Ms. and the feminist movement.
